Discover Love, Adventure, and Courage in My New Book!
Damn! I’m stuck hanging 180 feet above the ground and nervous about what happens next. My first rappel into a 200-foot-deep cave in Mexico wasn’t going as planned. I was dangling 18 stories above my friends with my glove mangled between the aluminum brake bars of my rappel rack. Suspended on my first vertical cave.
Still working on the website, and I'm an old fart, so be patient.
John Ryskamp will present a slideshow on two caving expeditions to Mexico in the 1970s. He rappelled into Sotano de las Golondrinas (1,092 feet), Sotano del Barro (1,345 feet), Ahuachatlan (946 feet), and other pits. These are some of the longest free rappels in the world. John Ryskamp will present a slideshow on his travels around the world with his late wife in 1984-1985. This includes backpacking in Nepal, New Zealand, Norway, Australia, and Hawaii. They climbed Gokyo Ri Peak (17,575 feet) and Kala Patthar (18,519) after trekking to Everest base camp. Visit his website at wordrecycler.com for more information (photos, biography, book excerpts).
Reply: No Photoshop, the photo is real, and the water is frigid, with real snow on the banks. However, the image is staged. The water is only 6 inches deep, so I’m not really swimming. When a girlfriend dared me to take off my skis and jump in, I just had to call her bluff in the buff.
